Ensembles
Marching Band
The most active of our ensembles, this group performs at all Cherokee football games, three marching contest throughout the Southeast, the Knoxville Christmas Parade, and various other school and community functions, as well as hosting the annual Smoky Mountain Marching Festival.
Concert Band
The SDHS Concert Band meets fourth block during second semester.The SDHS Concert
Band gives at least 2
concerts a year (Mid-Winter & Spring) in addition to competing in at
least one state music festival as well as the
possibility of other festivals. This group is open to all band students
grades 9-12.
Wind Ensemble
The SDHS Wind Ensemble meets third block during second semester. The instrumentation of this group is limited and acceptance is by audition only (audition material will be available in late August and auditions will take place in September). The musical demands on this group will be high and outside practice is a must. This group will give at least 2 concerts a year (Mid-winter and Spring) in addition to competing in at least one state music festival. Other performances are a possibility and will be made known to you at the earliest possible date.
Jazz Ensemble
This is a select group of musicians that constitute a performing group specializing in jazz, rock, blues, and swing music. Membership is limited by proper instrumentation and may be evaluated by audition. Activities include concerts, public performances, and possible jazz festivals. This ensemble meets once a week after school on Tuesdays (4:00-6:00 p.m.) and is open to 9-12th grade students enrolled in a band class.
Winter Guard
This ensemble will begin meeting in early October and will meet once per week after school. This ensemble is dependent on interest and ability levels and will compete in January and February 2010. Competitions are on Saturdays and exact dates will be given as soon as they are available. This ensemble is open to all students in grades 8-12. There will be an activity fee for this ensemble.
Fusion Cast
This is a new addition to the SDHS Ensemble Repertoire. This ensemble will be open to any 9-12 grade band student and will be filled through an audition process. Wind, percussion, guard, and various acting positions are needed. There will be a large scale and strict rehearsal structure before and/or after school. It will culminate in a series of performances during the second semester. A student must be enrolled in both semesters of instrumental music to participate in this one of a kind activity. (Colorguard members may receive an exception - see the director for details) There will be a $25 activity fee for this ensemble.
Create-Your-Own Combo
Get together with your section mates and other band members and make music. If you're all serious and if you're any good, we'll try to arrange practice space and performance opportunities for your group.
